The practical nursing program at Davenport University is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. The Practical Nursing program is designed to prepare the graduate at the diploma level with the skill and knowledge necessary to function in the role of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The LPN uses the nursing process to meet the needs of patients in all age groupings. The LPN graduate will also use effective communication with members of the health care team, provide appropriate health teaching and serve as an advocate for both patient and families.
Upon acceptance of a nursing seat, the following courses within the Practical Nurse Diploma program are required to be completed at Davenport University (BIOL115, BIOL116). Credits for required biology courses will not be transferred after nursing seat acceptance.

Students who may eventually wish to submit an application to the BSN Pre-Licensure program are strongly encouraged to complete BIOL221 3 credits, BIOL221L 1 credit, BIOL222 3 credits and BIOL222L 1 credit instead of BIOL115 and BIOL116. The Practical Nursing degree requirements must be met based on the catalog year of acceptance to the nursing program.
It is recommended that students take a Medical terminology class in preparation for acceptance to the Practical Nursing program.
The Department of Education requires Davenport University to provide certain information (Gainful Employment Disclosure) regarding this diploma program to aid students in making a decision to enroll.
This course is required in the first semester of admission for select transfer students to the College of Health Professions (CoHP) to complete the criminal back-ground check (CBC) and drug screen (DS) testing. This course is also a primer regarding the importance of professionalism in healthcare and patient privacy and the use of universal precautions and safety requirements for the healthcare setting. An introduction to the CoHP practicum and/or clinical professional practice experience will be included. An introduction to the current CoHP Student Handbook is included in the course. A $160.00 fee is charged to cover the costs of the CBC/DS process. Note: If the CBC/DS process is not completed in the specified timeframe, a failing grade will be given for the course. This foundational course introduces students to the application of nursing theory in the practice of professional nursing. The student will be guided to utilize critical thinking skills, when applying the nursing process in the care of adult clients, leading to the development of clinical judgment. Evidence-based fundamental nursing concepts, essential to the provision of nursing care, including holism, safety, communication, and basic client needs will be introduced

This course introduces basic knowledge, skills, and critical thinking concepts necessary for delivery of bedside nursing. The student will learn to apply the nursing process and develop beginning clinical judgment in laboratory settings and through direct patient care experiences. The clinical learning objectives focus on meeting the basic healthcare needs of the older adult, chronically ill persons and their families. NURS101C requires 90 hours of clinical time for the semester.

This course is designed to introduce the nursing student to the fundamentals of nutrition. Integration of the nursing process will be achieved through case studies and care plans designed for the adult client with nutritional health needs. This course introduces students to expository and persuasive writing. Employing critical thinking and the writing process, students will compose academic essays utilizing a variety of modes. They will also analyze and respond to a variety of academic and professional readings. Students will evaluate information and audience to improve form and content. Students are also introduced to the research process, including finding, evaluating, and documenting sources, to complete a short research project using the American Psychological Association Style. This course is designed to prepare students for the traditional calculus sequence. Course coverage includes the definitions, properties, and arithmetic of algebraic expressions, solving equations and inequalities, an introduction to functions, graphing equations and functions (e.g., linear, quadratic, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic). The course also includes a brief introduction to right triangle trigonometry. Techniques of problem solving and applications are integrated throughout the course.
